Goals of YOMITAN Village
The 3rd Integrated Plan (June 1998 ~ March 2008)
Basic Doctrine:
Permanent Peace, Sovereign Independence, and Lasting Cohabitation
YOMITAN Village has been successfully promoting the protection of its environment and the establishment of a cultural community. However, there are problems to be solved. Measures should be taken to allow the people to live in harmony with their environment rather than just preserving it. The municipal activities should be considered as mutual cooperation rather than participation. The way people think and behave are constantly changing.
Based on the basic doctrine of permanent peace, sovereign independence, and lasting cohabitation and villagers' cooperation as well as full understanding, a new motto of the village can be expressed as the following Ryukyu poem which will describe the major policies of the village for the future development, be in rhythm, and state the identity of the community:

Yutasa aru funshi:
"Yutasa aru funshi" (rich environment) indicates that YOMITAN village will try to establish a rich environment which includes natural beauty, efficient utilization of the land, and comfortable surroundings for the villagers. The symbolic color of YOMITAN village is dark green which is the color of the green forests of Okinawa.
Masaru chimugukukuru:
"Masaru chimugukuru" (warm-hearted people of noble character) will make it possible for the people of YOMITAN Village to contribute to the welfare, equal opportunities for men and women, and self-governing municipal administration so that the best suitable community for all villagers will be established. The principle to nurture good hearted people and human resources will be the foundation for life-long studies and peace movements of the community. The symbolic color from this point of view is coral white.
Sakifukuru hanaya:
"Sakifukuru hana ya" (the glorious shinning culture) indicates that the village's goal is to establish a vital community characterized by advanced skills in cultural and traditional arts and crafts as well as other industries. The symbolic color from this point of view is the red color of Okinawan clay that is used for pottery making.
Mura nu miatei:
"Mura nu miate" (the guideline of our village) means that it will inspire the villagers to work together toward the common goal specified by the basic principles and prescribed an effective utilization of the village's human resources to achieve the goal. The symbolic color from this point of view is the emerald green of the abundant coral reef sea which can be observed at Ino area of the village.
Image of the Village is a flying phoenix:

From an aerial view, the geographic outline of YOMITAN Village resembles a phoenix flying toward the East China Sea. The head of the phoenix is Zanpa Point and its wings consist of mountains which include Takoyama and Zakimi Castle. The phoenix is carrying a coral reel in its mouth to welcome the happiness that comes from the overseas land of Niraikanai (a paradise) and goes into the golden rim of Zakimi Castle. Zakimi Castle is like a waist towel blown by the wind. The people, goods, and cultures meet at the crossroads of the main street of Yomitan Village whose west side is a busy community and east side is calm and peaceful. Nagata River runs along the skirts of the mountains and washes away the past with its flow.
Future Image of YOMITAN Village
From an aerial view, the geographic outline of YOMITAN Village resembles a phoenix which is taking off toward the East China Sea. The phoenix has a coral reef in its mouth and the wind blowing into the wings from the eastern mountains below gives the bird an aura of pwer. The phoenix, which is ready to fly into the 21st century, is a symbol of the dreams and hopes of the villagers of YOMITAN.
The illustration of the phoenix was drawn by Bokunen Naka, a famous woodblock artist of Okinawa, for YOMITAN Village to express its future image.
